5 questions to ask before buying a dishwasher

Dishwashers were once considered a luxury, but they’re now an essential and time-saving kitchen appliance. Today’s dishwashers boast sophisticated features like modern design, energy-saving settings, and custom modes.

As tempting as it may be to splurge on the newest model, it’s best to do your research and figure out what type of dishwasher will suit both your needs and your budget. Here are five questions to guide you on your search for the best dishwasher.

1. Will it fit your kitchen?

Measurements are a must, so take note of the size of the area where your dishwasher will reside. Make sure you’ll have enough space even with the dishwasher door open. Bring these measurements with you when shopping to ensure that the dishwasher you choose will match the dimensions of your space.

You should also consider how your dishwasher will fit into the existing aesthetics of your kitchen. If most of your kitchen appliances are free-standing, then it would make sense to get a stand-alone dishwasher. But if you want something sleek and streamlined, get a built-in dishwasher that can be fitted into your cabinetry. For a more seamless and cohesive look, fully integrated dishwashers are your best bet. They expand on the built-in idea, with doors finished using the same materials as the kitchen cabinetry.

2. What place settings and rack types do you want?

If you plan on using your dishwasher for daily dishes, then a standard model with two racks that can hold 12 place settings will do. But if you’re one to host frequent dinner parties or outdoor barbecues, opt for a dishwasher with a larger capacity. These dishwashers can hold up to 16 place settings and have a bigger loading height—perfect for bulky plates, hefty pots, and tall glasses.

Other dishwashers also have racks with customisable arrangements, special compartments for cutlery, and spaces to fit in odd-shaped items.

3. What dishwashing settings do you need?

Standard dishwashers have settings such as normal wash, pots and pans, and rinse that meet the needs of any regular household. But if you’re in the market for more personalised options, choose a dishwasher that offers different modes. These can include an economy or green mode to save on energy and water, a fast or speed mode to reduce cleaning time, a heavy-duty or intensive mode for the dirtiest of dishes, and a night mode for a quieter wash.

4. What style do you have in mind?

Your new dishwasher should not only be functional; it should suit your lifestyle as well. Standard-issue dishwashers typically have sturdy PVC exteriors and plastic dish racks, but stainless steel dishwashers are rust  and stain-free, and last longer than their standard counterparts. High-quality dishwashers also feature electronic displays and tactile top switches instead of front buttons and lights.

An affordable dishwasher can be a good choice, but a more expensive, high-end dishwasher is better in the long run.

5. What special features are you looking for?

Once you’ve locked down the basics, it’s time to look at those exciting add-ons. Some dishwashers have a knife caddy, removable trays, and height-adjustable baskets. Others have extra features like a pre-rinse function to save you all that scraping time and effort, and an express drying system to leave your dishes free from spots and streaks.

Whichever model you choose, make sure to get a dishwasher with the functionality you need and the added features you want.
